Abstract
Composite is composed from mixtures or combinations of two or more main elements which are different in the form and composition of the material which can not be separated. The objective of this research is to analyze how much effect of the variation alkali composition of coconut fiber with NaOH 0%, 4%, 8% to the mechanical strength of the composite. Preparation of composite specimen is done by hand lay up method, the material used is polyester resin, coconut fiber with length 20 mm with coconut fiber fraction volume 30% - 70% polyester. Time immersion is 2 hours using NaOH with variation 0% NaOH, 4% NaOH, and 8% NaOH. Physical tests were performed with SEM (Scaning Electron Microscopy) observation, and impact testing to observe the mechanical properties of composite specimens. From the results of test, the optimum results obtained in this research occurred in the variation of 4% NaOH with impact value of 0.0176 J / mm2, SEM test results show the presence of voids in the specimen, this can happen because the process of stirring or printing is not perfect that causes the entry of air.
