Abstract

The purpose of this study are to 1) Identify the condition of soil physical properties (color, texture, bulk density, total pore space. 2) Determine the condition of water management systems in supporting the growth of com plants. 3) Identifying the links between the physical properties of soil and good water management system for the development of com plants. This research was conducted on reclaimed swamp area secondery block P17 5-STelang II, Mulyasari Village Tanjung Lago District Banyuasin in December 2009 toFebruary 2010.The method used in this study is an intensive level survey method by using the map scale 1: 5000. Reseacrh is 16 ha. Soil sampling conducted using a grid system / lines with a depth of 0 to 120 cm. The soil characteristics observed based on the physical properties of soil include: soil color, soil texture, bulk density, total pore space, soil permeability. The physical properties of soil at tertiary block 4 The dominant texture of the tertiary clay, where the percentage fraction of 18:44% sand, silt 30.43%, 51.13% clay fractions. While the dominant clay in the Tertiary 12, where the percentage of sand fraction 24.46%, silt 46.79%, 28.75% clay fractions.areThe dominant color of the soil has a gray (10YR 6/1). Bulk Density at tertiary 4 at point 1 in first layer is 1.14 gr cm'3, while in the second layer is 0.95 g cm'3. The total pore space in the first layer is 57% and 64% in the second layer.Water management system is macro and micro. Macro water management System comes from a big river or the sea flowing into the primary channel to the secondary channel. From that channel, water flowing into the tertiary channel straight quarter of plots of land that is called micro water management system. Hydrological conditions can be seen whether the land at the research flooded or not. If the land flooded the development of com crop is needed for making worm channels as deep as 40 cm.The relationship of physical properties of soil with water management systemis to good operation of floodgates and there is good ground processing of the physical properties of soil which occurred opposite the texture of clay, somewhat blackish ground color, low density content, namely 0.95 to 1.14 gr cm'3. And the total pore space is medium. So that irrigation in rice cultivation went smoothly although there are some constraints with mud. The land that is not flooded because the drainage is good, besides the land must also be plowed so that crops can be cultivated for com. From the results of the physical properties of soil and water management Systems at locations Secondary block P17-5S Telang II, Mulyasari Village, Tanjung Lago Sub District shows that the tertiary 12 shows the best location for the development of com plants.
