Abstract

Low rank coal has a water content too high and can reduce the calorific value of coal. Low rank coal is still constrained in its utilization. This problem can be overcome by upgrading low quality coal. Coal upgrading in this study by heating coal to open coal pores and the water content in it out. The discharge of water in the pores will cause the water content in coal to decrease so that the calorific value of coal will increase. However, the open pores will easily absorb water again if left too long. So it must be done coating. The coating materials used in this study were coconut oil and palm fatty acid destilate (PFAD). The variables used in this study were variations in the types of coating materials (coconut oil, PFAD) and variations in composition (5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%). Analysis is carried out on coal characteristics in the form of Inherent moisture, ash content, volatile matter, fixed carbon, caloric value, and water absorption. Additive substances mixed into coal briquettes can affect the characteristics of coal and improve coal quality. From the results of the research the additives that produced the best characteristics were PFAD. With a composition of 25% PFAD and 75% coal. The test results were in the form of 9,72% moisture content, 3,95% ash content, 32,2% flying substance content, 6.604,83 cal / gram calorific value, and absorbing water as much as 0,55 grams in 20 days of storage. So that PFAD is more effectively used as a coating material in the coal upgrading process.
