Abstract
Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is potential for improving soil quality due to its nutrient value. Its direct application may benefit in two ways, namely help reducing the adverse impact on its surrounding while contributing to soil fertility for plant requirement. This study aims to evaluate volume change of palm oil effluent inthe flatbed, to measure effluent viscosity, and to determine soil pH, permeability, texture and content of soil N, P and K in the plantation. This research was conductedat PT. Perkindo Makmur, village of Gasing, Subdistrict of Talang Kelapa, District ofBanyuasin from December 2010 through March 2011. This study used directobservation method in the field. The measurement of volume change used Peilschallboard that was placed in 3 locations of flatbed at block E8 bed 1, bed 30 and bed 60.The results show that the dynamic change in volume of palm oil effluent in a flatbed increases and the addition of the volume of waste water is affected by rainfall. Flow rate viscosity (thickness) of waste water is slow due to the residual palm oil mixed in waste. Soil texture in the flatbed are mostly clay and silty clay, with very slow permeability (<0.5 cm/h), while soil nitrogen content ranges fforn 0.12 to 0.21%, soil phosphorus from 0.90 to 9.15 mg/kg, levels of soil potassium from 0.13 to 0.64 cmol/kg. These soils are classified as very acidic soil pH (2.40 to 3.03), while the waste water is neutral (pH 7.30).
