Abstract
Oryctes rhinoceros is a major pest in young oilpalm plantations, but recently it was reported that its attack increased on young and older oilpalms. The study was aimed to determine the most effective method of application of entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema sp. to control larvae of third instar O. rhinoceros. This research was conducted in the Laboratory Toxicology Department of Plant Pests and Diseases Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Inderalaya. Observation began ffom July 2009 until October 2010. This research was performed in serial using completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatments (400, 600, and 800 individues of nematode) and five replications. Observation was done on mortality of third instar of O. rhinoceros larvae which was applied with entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema sp. By direct spray method and mixly with soil method. The results showed that method of direct spraying Steinernema sp. Killed the larvae O. rhinoceros more effective than mixing method. Effectiveness of this method was caused by directly interaction between nematode and O. rhinoceros larvae. The higher the dose of nematodes Steinernema sp. applied, the faster mortality of O. rhinoceros larvae.
