Abstract

Use of bioactive substances from plant extracts as safe insecticides is wellknown since ancient and has enormous intuitive appeal. The toxic principles from plants with insect pest control properties are as repellents, antifeedants, oviposition deterrents, and insect growth regulators. Application of plant extracts as natural insecticides emphasizes has great potential in crop pest management. Natural insecticides are low cost, local availability and safe to the environment. Kaempferia galanga, has shown a promise as a source of antifeedants. Turmeric is used commonly for spices, and medicinal herbs. As one of Zingiberaceaous family members turmeric is used locally and traditionally to cure against appendicities, anaemia, diarrhoea, et cetera. On the other hand, turmeric has been characterised by the presence of several essential oils, such as cineol, eugenol, galangin, galangol, pinen, camphor, and methylcinnamate. It has the potent mortality, antifeedant and repellent activities on some insects species, and may affect some biological parameters such as growth rate, life span, and reproduction. In Indonesia, use of turmeric as natural insecticide is not yet known. Green house trial to assess insecticidal activities of turmeric (Spodoptera litura) has been conducted. Mortality parameter is applied to LC50. Result showed that no LC50 value obtained by applying extract concentration on armyworm measure gained from preliminary experiment. ECso’s of extract was 2.389 g/ml. LT50 was 28.441. Effect of extract on feeding reduction showed significant increase, i.e., treatment B value as 11.1%, treatment C value as 16.7%, treatment D value as 25%, treatment E value as 36.1% and treatment F value as 50%, respectively, compared to control 5.6%.
