Abstract

The objective of this research was to figure out the effects of nitrogen fertilizer on the infection of C. cassiicola, the causal agent of leaf fail disease ofDESTY SOFARIANI.rubber (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg).The research was conducted in greenhouse and Phytopathological laboratory of the Department of Plant Pests and Disease, Faculty of Agriculture, SriwijayaUniversity, from September to November 2005.The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design with sixThe treatments were A (control, 0 gramtreatments and five replications.nitrogen/plant), treatment B (2 gram nitrogen/plant), treatment C (4 gramnitrogen/plant), treatment D (6 gram nitrogen/plant), treatment E (8 gramnitrogen/plant), treatment F (10 gram nitrogen/plant). Pathogen inoculation was done by spraying spore suspension at spore density of 4 x 104 spore/ml. The spores used were harvested ffom C. cassiicola cultured on sterile rubber leaves. Theparameters observed were incubation period, disease intensity, leaf spot area, and latent period.The results showed that nitrogen fertilizer did not significantly affect incubation period, but high-significantly affected disease intensity and significantly affected leaf spot area. The incubation period of C. cassiicola averagely ranged ffom17.8 to 21.2 days. The disease intensity averagely ranged from 19.78 to 45.97 percents and lesion area averagely ranged from 0.168 to 1.267 cm . The observation in the greenhouse showed that the best nitrogen fertilizer to suppress leaf fail diseasecaused by C. cassiicola (Berk & Curt) Wei was 6 grams nitrogen fertilizer pernursery plant.
