Abstract

Has been research conducted of natural bentonite clay adsorpti• on of Mn2 + and Cr3+ and its application in peat water. This research aimed to determined the characteristics of natural bentonite, determined the optimum adsorption time Mn + and Cr3+’ determined the adsorption capacity of natural bentonite clay as absorbent Mn2+ and Cr3+ and its application in the peat water was taken from the clinic location (sample 1) and market (sample 2) from Gasing Laut Viilage of Talang Kelapa List at Banyuasin District. This research involved the characterization of natural bentonite clay using XRD and FTIR method, the determination of adsorption equilibrium time of natural bentonite clay against Mn2+ and Cr3+, the determination of adsorption capacity of natural bentonite clay against Mn2+ and Cr3+ in Standard solution and bentonite clay absorbent nature of Mn2+ and Cr3+ in peat water by using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (SSA). The results showed that natural bentonite clay has a bacal spacing dooi 3.19754 A. Mn2+ solution obtained equilibrium time 60 minutes, with a maximum concentration of 1.3 ppm and the adsorption capacity of 1.7258 mg / g. To a solution of Cr3+ obtained equilibrium time 80 minutes, with a maximum concentration of 3.0 ppm and the adsorption capacity of 4.2340 mg / g. In sample 1, the natural bentonite clay can reduce levels of Mn2+ from 0.0084 ppm to 0.0068 ppm or 19.04% while in sample 2, the natural bentonite clay can reduce levels of Mn2+ from 0.0512 ppm to 0.0357 ppm or 30.27%. In samples 1 and 2 the concentration of Cr was not detected by the SSA because the concentration was very small.
