Abstract

The research of synthesis of the ZnO-Fe3O4 and its application to the degradation of methylene blue had been done. Composites were made with massa ratio of ZnO to Fe3O4 (1:1), (1:2) and (2:1). The composite results were then characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS and UV-Vis DRS instruments. The results of XRD characterization on the ZnO-Fe3O4 (1:1) composite showed the formation of a typical peak at an angle of 2θ around 35.60o with a crystal size of 11.2682 nm. Energy band gap value of the ZnO-Fe3O4 composite (1:1) obtained from the UV-Vis DRS characterization is 1.72 eV. Morphological character of ZnO-Fe3O4 (1:1) composite characterized using SEM-EDS showed a around shape with an uneven surface with small particle size with the composition of the constituent elements of Zn (29.95%), O (7.11%) and Fe (59.18%). From the instrumentation results, ZnO-Fe3O4 (1:1) composite has been chosen as photocatalyst to degrade methylene blue. The photodegradation process of methylene blue was carried out with several variables including the effect of irradiation time and the effect of the initial concentration of dye. The optimum condition for photodegradation was obtained at a irradiation time of 180 minutes with a initial concentration of 5 ppm showed that the percent of photodegradation was of 88.94 %.
