Abstract

Research on a heterogeneous catalyst in the form of montmorillonite sulfonated carbon composite has been done. Montmorillonite sulfonated carbon composite was prepared by mixing molasses with montmorillonite and was stirred for 1 hour. Mixture was heated at temperature 120°C for 6 hour to reduce the water content. Mixture was carbonized at temperature of 400°C for 15 hours. The results of carbonization performed sulfonation process at temperature of 175°C for 15 hours. The product of sulfonation was washed with demin water repeatedly until pH neutral. The product was cailed montmorillonite sulfonated carbon composite. Catalyst montmorillonite sulfonated carbon composite performance was tested using acid-base titration method. Montmorillonite sulfonated carbon composite was characterized using FT-IR to study the structure and SEM to study surface topology. Montmorillonite sulfonated carbon composite was applied to the esterification reaction of acetic acid-ethanol and products were identified using GC-MS. Acidity test indicated that the acid number reaches 9.79 mmol g-1. FT-IR showed the presence of sulfonated groups on the 1750 cm'1 and 1087.85 cm'1. SEM EDX was showed that indicate a sulfur atom sulfonate group attached to the composite. The esterification test reached 72.674% of yield.
