Abstract

The isolation and identification of compound from the polar fraction of the betel nut (Areca catechu L.) had been done. The extraction were done by maseration method, while the separation and puriflcation was conducted by chromatography techniques. The isolated compound was yellow solid. Based on TLC analysis and spectroscopic data (UV and IR) showed that the isolated compound had OH, C=0 ester, C=0 conjugated, aromatic and aliphatic group. The methanol extract of thr betel nut showed inhibition low activity on growth of bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli concentration of 10000 ppm with inhibition diameter zone of 8,5 mm and 9 mm.
