Abstract

Social problems are the output of every stage of development in society that arise due to changes and result in shocks, especially changes that occur rapidly. Social problems that still occur are social problems in children, namely child labor and one of them is child scavengers. The purpose of this study was to determine the forms of empowerment of scavenger children and the supporting and inhibiting factors for the empowerment of scavenger children by the Save Street Child Palembang Community by using the concepts and theories of Edi Suharto. The benefits of this research can enrich the concepts and theories that support the science of sociology and add insight, especially in introductory courses in sociology, community empowerment and social problems. The research method used is descriptive qualitative research method. The results of this study show that the forms of empowerment carried out are routine teaching and scholarship programs, providing school and misfortune assistance, recreation to tourist attractions, selling basic food bazaars and distributing free food, and free medical treatment. Furthermore, internal supporting factors are communication such as holding meetings and evaluations and external supporting factors are resources or funds while internal inhibiting factors are the busyness of community members and external inhibiting factors are the difficulty of changing the mindset of children and their parents.
