Abstract

Research entitled Fe3O4-TiO2 and its application to the photodegradation of methylene blue dye had been investigated. Fe3O4-TiO2 composites had been prepared with mass ratios (1:1), (1:2) and (2:1) and were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS and UV-Vis DRS instruments. The photodegradation process of methylene blue had been carried out in several variables including the effect of the initial concentration of methylene blue and the effect of the photodegradation time of methylene blue and at conditions above pHpzc. The results of XRD characterization of Fe3O4-TiO2 composite showed the formation of a typical peak at an angle of 2θ around 25.34°. The energy band gap values of Fe3O4-TiO2 (1:1), (1:2) and (2:1) from the results of the UV-Vis DRS characterization were 2.06 eV; 2.05 eV and 2.064 eV. The morphology of the Fe3O4-TiO2 composite, which was characterized using SEM-EDS showed a small round shape, tends to be homogeneous, smooth surface and small pores with the elemental composition of Fe, Ti and O being 61.38%; 18.20% and 20.48%, respectively. Based on the instrumentation, composite Fe3O4-TiO2 (1:2) was chosen as photocatalyst to degrade methylene blue. The best conditions for photodegradation were obtained from the effect of the initial dye concentration of 5 mg/L and a contact time of 180 minutes at pH 5 with the highest percentage reduction in concentration of 68.45% and 66.53%, respectively. The results showed that the Fe3O4-TiO2 composite was able to degrade methylene blue.
