Abstract

The Transmigrants of the Javansese and Sundanese in Nusa Makmur Village was basically having different ethnic background, culture, custom, language, and religion. Of these differences, in daily life the inter-etnic community can form a social distance in an affective, interactive, normative, or cultural and habitual. The purpose of this study was to identify the image of social distance between Javanese and Sundanese in Nusa Makmur Village, Air Kumbang District of Banyuasin Regency. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. Theory used to analyze this social distance problem was the social distance theory from Emory S. Bogardus. Data were collected by observation, documentation and in depth interview with the eleven informants; nine as main informants and two as supporting informants. The results of the study indicating that there are three dominant dimensions of social distance occuring at Nusa Makmur Village, the three dimensions of social distance include social distance in affective, interactive, and socio-cultural and habitual which were the result of associative social relations between Javanese and Sundanese in Nusa Makmur Village. While the normative dimensions of social distance not much appears in the lives of Javanese and Sundanese. Then dissociative social relations also do not appear much in life society, the existence only appears in mutual ridicule about different languages as a joke. The dominant social relationship is associative social relations that brings people to positive attitudes to accept each other and form close relationship, even now they feel united as fellow villagers in Nusa Makmur Village
