Abstract
Phycocyanin has antioxidant activity that can counteract the free radical cause of aging. Determination of antioxidant activity was done by DPPH method (1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil) and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power). IC50 phycocyanin obtained was 1176.895 μg/mL with FRAP method and 916.006 μg/mL with DPPH method. The formulation of phycocyanin S. platensis antiaging cream was performed using variation of phycocyanin concentration F1 (1%), F2 (2%), and F3 (3%). Physical evaluation was performed on several test parameters: organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, adhesion, dispersion, and washability. The results showed that the different concentrations of phycocyanin contained in the antiaging cream preparations may affect the physical characteristics and antioxidant activity of the cream preparations. The increased concentration of phycosianin will cause the blue color of the cream. The thickness of the cream is wider with increasing phyocyanin concentration, but the pH value, viscosity, dispersion, and washability of the cream decrease with increasing phycocyanin concentration. The assay analysis showed that the amount of phycocyanin contained in the cream preparations in F1, F2, and F3 were respectively 92.91 ± 0.77%; 96.86 ± 0.51%; 95.64 ± 0.77%. Antiaging cream of phycocyanin S. platensis decreased antioxidant activity with IC50 value 1434.022 μg/mL with FRAP method and 1406.177 μg/mL with DPPH method. Percent of inhibition of F1, F2, and F3 by DPPH method were 41.752%, 54.686%, and 60.752% respectively, while FRAP method was 37.124%, 59.807%, and 62.423%. Stability testing of cream preparation was done by centrifugation method and cycling test which was done for 6 cycles. The results showed that the cream of F1, F2, and F3 was not physically stable due to the change of color.
