Abstract
The objective of this research was to design and to test automatic drier based on the change of hulled rice surface height. This study was conducted from November 2007 to April 2008 at Workshop of Agricultura! Technology Department. Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University and Regional Division 1 of BULOG. South Sumatra, Palembang on May 2008. It was carried out by using automatic drier provided with light dependent resistor (LDR) to govem the drying process automatically. The three rice varieties used in this study consisted of long grain size (IR-64 variety), medium grain size (Ciherang variety), and short grain size (Surya variety) which treated with air flow rates of 7.5 m.s'1, 13.5 m.s'1, and 14.5 m.s'1, and three replications for each treatment combinations. The observed water content of hulled rice, total heat energy, drying rate, drying capacity, surrounding air temperature, drying time, air humidity within drying chamber, initial and final weights of hulled rice, and height of hulled rice. The method used was descriptive method by using tabulation and graphs. Based on the milled rice quality, the best treatment was air flow at 14.5 m.s'1 for all varieties (IR-64, Ciherang and Surya).
