Abstract
This research objective was to modify pineapple’s fibre tools to get the best connecting joint of pineapple’s fibre by using polyvinyl alcohol glue. It was conducted from May to August 2006 at Balai Latihan Kerja Teknik Palembang and Farm Machinery and Equipment Workshop of Agricultural Technology Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya. The research consisted of four stages covering preliminary study, the design approach, the equipment’s modification, and the equipment testing. The result showed that the connection of pineapple’s fibres by using pineapple’s fibre jointer with heating system had produced relatively good quality of pineapple’s fibre which is extremely helpfiil for pineapple’s fibres craftmen in production. In addition, polyvinyl alcohol glue produced the best pulling power. The working capacity was increased from 0.0212 kg.h'1 to 0.085 kg.h'1 and the required connecting time could be reduced from 39.2 seconds to 23.82 seconds after modification. It needs two operators for operated this tools. This tools operated at the maximum temperature of 80°C and its temperature will be uniformly distributed within 45 minutes. The power requirement for this tools was 313.5 Watts. The result of pulling power test that was carried out by using dry test had the best value of 0.567xl0'10 N.m‘2 with connection using polyvinyl glue. On the other hand, the wet test of connection using polyvinyl glue had the Iowest value of 0.088xl0'10 N.m'2 compared to knotting connection that had value of 0.079xl0',° N.m'2 and before connection with value of 0.102x1 O'10 N.m*2. The curling test with the Iowest grade was connection using polyvinyl glue with magnitude of 1.1778 %. This value was very small compared to curling grade of pineapple’s fibre that used knotting connection with magnitude of 1.6451 %. The value of this pineapple’s fibre curling grade was greater than the pineapple’s fibre curling grade before connecting that had magnitude of 1.437 %.
