Abstract
This article discusses the push and pulls factors of the people living surrounding the protected forests in Pagaralam, a sub-district of Lahat Regency, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia, that caused the deforestation of the areas. The field study found the impacts of the forest management policies, demographic change in the region, sociocultural factors, and the effects of coffee production that altogether contribute to the deforestation of the protected forest areas.
