Abstract
The most detrimental plant pest organism to oil palm plantations is the fungus Ganoderma boninense which causes basal stem rot disease (BSR). Until now, the control of BSR has not been successful due to the nature of Ganoderma sp. which is a soil-borne pathogen and persists in the soil for a long time. It is suspected that herbal plants such as Bogor taro can suppress BSR disease. This study aimed to determine the effect of Ganoderma boninense double infection on oil palm seedlings and Bogor taro using rubber wood inoculum sources with different sizes on disease severity in oil palm. The research was carried out from May to November 2020 at the Shadow House and Phytopathology Laboratory, Program Study Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The study was conducted using a factorial randomized block design with 5 replications. The first factor is the cropping system which consists of 2 levels, namely (intercropping of oil palm and Bogor taro, and single crop of oil palm). The second factor was the size of the inoculum which consisted of 4 levels, namely: (Without inoculum (BKK only), BKK volume 60 cm³ colonized by G. boninense, BKK volume 120 cm³ colonized by G. boninense and BKK volume 240 cm³ colonized by G. boninense). The results showed that the intercropping of oil palm and Bogor taro and single oil palm plantations after 3 months of G. boninense inoculation showed primary symptoms in the form of a brownish root discoloration and root tissue death (necrosis). The length of the necrotic roots due to G. boninense infection was not significantly affected by intercropping but the infection was affected by the size of the inoculum. The larger the size of the inoculum, the length of the necrotic roots will increase. Larger inoculum size causes more severe disease. The growth of oil palm plants measured by height and leaf area after 3 months of G. boninense inoculation on intercropping of oil palm and Bogor taro was not significantly different when compared to inoculation on single planting of oil palm, but growth was better if inoculated with bigger different inoculum size.
