Abstract

Smoking behavior is the behavior of burning one of the tobacco products to be burned, smoked or inhaled. Many factors cause this smoking behavior to occur, one of which is family interpersonal communication. Interpersonal Communication is a social process which person in it can affect each other. Interpersonal communication can be effective if there are transparency, emphatic, support, and possitive behavior. The closeness between parent and their children in this communication can build a good relation and value with a hope that the children won’t do smoking things. Research method that the researcher use is a quantitative research using cross sectional design of research. The sample in this study were parents and their children who attended school in SMPN 55 Palembang as many 53 respondents. The analysis used in this research are univariate and bivariate. The results of the study the percentages of smoking behavior with poor family interpersonal communication was 81,0% and the percentage of non-smoking behavior with poor interpersonal communication was 19,0%. While the percentage for smoking behavior with good interpersonal communication is 34,4% and the percentage for non smoking behavior with good interpersonal communication is 65,5%. This shows that there is a relationship between family interpersonal communication on smoking behavior in adolescents with p-value 0,002<0,005. This research is expected for parents to take an important part in controlling, actuating, and guilding their children from the bad impact of smoking behavior, also to maintain a good communication between them.
