Abstract

Observation on the community structure of soft corals were carried out on July 2007 in Tegal Island, Lampung Bay, Lampung Province. The purpose of this research was to determine the community structure of soft corals in the waters of Tegal Island included Percent cover, diversity index and evenness index of soft corals. The method that used was Line Intercept Transect Method with 5 and 10 depth at six stations. The physics and chemistry parameter values ffom the research still carried on soft corals life. The percent cover of soft corals about 0 - 5,8%, the diversity index about 0 - 1,05664 and the value of evenness index about 0-1. Sinularia and Sarcophyton were genus from soft corals that found in the waters of Tegal Island. The competitions in space struggling that happened between soft corals and hard corals caused negative correlation at 5-meter depth between percent cover of soft corals and hard corals. At 10 meter depth occurred positive correlation between percent cover of soft corals and hard corals. This situation happened because the capability of soft corals that can survive concomitant with depth increasing, than balanced percent cover of hard corals.
