Abstract

The research has been done on composition, spreading pattern and community structure of mollusca (gastropods and bivalves) and its association with mangrove ecosystem in Musi River estuary, south sumatera province. This research has been conducted on july 31s‘ 2007 - August lst 2007. The samples were taken around Musi river estuary. The sampling was done in five (5) observation stations, those were: station 1 (Tanjung Buyut), station 2 ( Upang Luar), station 3 (Upang Luar), station 4 (Sungsang), and station 5 (Pulau Payung). The data collected in this research was the data of sediment physics parameter and sediment chemistry parameter. The obtained data showed that this areas were still good for Mollusca life perpetuity (Gastropods and Bivalves). Based on the Identification and computation results, it was gotten that mollusca composition found in research area contains of 21 species mollusca from 15 families, 17 species gastropod from 12 families, and 4 species. Generally, Littorina scabra was the species that has the highest density (918,889 ind/ha). On the bivalve species, it was found very small amount in the observation location. Therefore, there was no species associate with the mangrove and among the species. The diversity index of mollusca showed average rate. It means that there was no dominant species. The association happened among gastropod species was positive, that was 83,33 % and the negative association was 16,67 %. Positive association happened on Ceratostoma inornatum, Phythia plicata, Littorina carifera, Neritina violacea, and Syncera brevicula. Negative association happened on Littorina scabra species. Association between mollusca and mangrove ecosystem was positive.
