Abstract

Low birth weight (LBW) is still a major public health problem in the world, especially in developing countries, and contributes greatly to increasing the infant mortality rate (IMR) in the world. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the incidence of low birth weight (LBW) in Asia. This study uses a systematic review and meta-analysis method. The literature search was carried out using databases the Google Scholar, PubMed Central (PMC), Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), and ScienceDirect. The literature searched was published between 2015 until 2020. Assessment of study quality used The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist. The meta-analysis carried out was heterogeneity test by looking at the I2 and p-value statistics, publication bias test by looking at the results of the funnel plot diagram, and a combined analysis of each risk factor for low birth weight (LBW). Data were analyzed using RevMan 5.3 software. There were 11 literatures from a total of 2,698 literatures included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. There was a significant relationship between gestational interval (OR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.11 – 1.40), nutritional status (OR: 3.17; 95% CI: 1.47 – 6.85) and anemia. (OR: 3.67; 95% CI: 1.41 – 9.56) with the incidence of low birth weight (LBW) (p < 0.05). Low birth weight (LBW) is associated with several maternal risk factors. Therefore, government efforts are needed in preventing the occurrence of low birth weight (LBW) and improving maternal and child health programs in local countries.
