Abstract

Coffee is one of the plantation commodities that plays an important role in the Indonesian economy. The presence of weeds in coffee fields can reduce production. Reductant is a mixture that is used to reduce pesticide doses, so it can reduce pesticide residues in the field and weed control becomes more economical. In weed control, Pagaralam coffee farmers are assumed to be divided into 2 categories, namely herbicide reductant users and non-herbicide reductant users. The data used is secondary data consisting of 24 variables on 136 coffee farmers. The purpose of this study was to apply the mean difference test, variance ratio test, and freedom test on the comparison of characteristics between coffee farmers who use reductants and those who do not use reductants. There are 9 variables that have a relationship with the categorization of coffee farmers, namely: Education, Land area, Planting area, Age of tree, Frequency of herbicide use, Maximum selling price of coffee beans, Average selling price of coffee beans, Number of workers from within the family, and Length of the harvest period. All of these variables have different mean values for the two categories of users and non-users of herbicide reductants at a significance level of = 10%. The results of the three tests show that the variables of harvest period, land area, and average selling price of coffee beans distinguish the two categories of respondents.
