Abstract

Background: Malaria is an infectious disease that affects various aspects of human life. Currently, Indonesia is listed as a low malaria endemic area with an API value of <1/1000 population. In the E-SISMAL data, the province of South Sumatra is recorded as a low malaria endemic area with the API experiencing a decline in the last three years. Lahat Regency, one of the regencies in South Sumatra which has also experienced a decline in API for the last three years, has made it a low malaria endemic area. However, in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 E-SISMAL data, there were still vilages with API ≥1 in Lahat Regency. The objective of this study was to analyze the determinants of malaria incidence in Lahat Regency based on E-SISMAL data. Methods: This is a quantitative study with case control design. The minimal sample calculation using the estimation formula of 2 proportions with a ratio of 1:2 resulted in 50 case samples and 100 controls. The sampling technique was Stratified Random Sampling with the strata of 2018, 2019 and 2020. The case sample was people with malaria positive and indigenous people in E-SISMAL, while controls were neighbors of the cases with same age and no malaria was recorded in E-SISMAL. Results: The Result of the bivariate test showed that there was a relationship between the habit of using mosquito repellent (p-value = 0.042) and the presence of a resting place of mosquitoes (p-value = 0.039) and the incidence of malaria. The dominant factor that influences the incidence of malaria in Lahat Regency was the presence of a resting place of mosquitoes (OR= 2,966, 95% CI: 1,052-8,366). Conclusion: A person with a home environment with a resting place for mosquitoes ≤100m is more at risk for malaria. Increased promotive efforts in determining preventive measures need to be carried out in order to reduce malaria rates in Lahat Regency.
