Abstract

This study aims to describe the principle of cooperation, consisting of obedience and violation of conversations between characters in the novel Negeri 5 Menara by Ahmad Fuadi. This research method uses descriptive qualitative. The source of the research data is the novel Negeri 5 Menara by Ahmad Fuadi. The data collection technique used is the listening and note-taking technique. Through the results of this study, it was found that all compliance with the cooperative principle consisted of 71 utterances, including 18 maxim of quantity data, 15 data of maxim of quality, 20 data of maxim of relevance, and 18 data of maxim of manner. The most data on this compliance is the maxim of relevance as much as 20 data. Meanwhile, all violations of the principle of cooperation in the novel were found, namely the maxims of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner of 30 utterances. This includes 9 maxims of quantity data, 6 maxims of quality data, 8 maxims of relevance data, and 7 maxims of data. The most commonly found utterances are the maxim of quantity with a total of 9 data. Overall, 101 utterances were described. The results of this study can be implied in learning Indonesian at the X grade high school level, namely learning debate.
