Abstract

Problems in the environment regarding the problem of plastic waste are often a concern in water areas. The Musi River, which is located in South Sumatra Province, has a lot of community activities around it. This activity can be the cause of plastic waste pollution until it is degraded into microplastics. Microplastics that enter the waters will spread into water bodies and end up settling in sediments. This research has been carried out from September 2021 to March 2022 located in the downstream waters of the Musi River as many as 6 station points by taking 1 kg of sediment samples. Parameter measurements were carried out in situ, including temperature, pH, salinity, current velocity. Sample analysis was carried out by preparation and extraction including drying, reducing sample volume, density separation with saturated Nacl solution and 30% H202 and filtering. Analysis of the type of sediment fraction was measured using Shepard's triangle diagram. Identification of microplastics using an Olympus CX23 microscope with 4X magnification and followed by testing of microplastics polymers using the FT-IR method. The results of the identification of the abundance of sediment microplastics at Station 1 Gandus were 0.73 particles/gr, Station 2 Ampera 1.38 particles/gr, Station 3 Pusri 1.07 particles/gr, Station 4 Upang 0.82 particles/gr, Station 5 Muara Breech 1.69 particles/gr and Tanjung Carat 6 station 0.80 particles/gr. The types of sedimentary microplastics polymers identified in the downstream waters of the Musi River include Low-density Polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyamide (PA), and polystyrene (PS).
