Abstract

Background: Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the main etiologies in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease found in plaque. Plaque can be controlled using toothpaste. The combination of herbal ingredients and toothpaste can produce complementary effects. Meanwhile, Gambier extract (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) was reported to contain catechin and tannin which act as antibacterial. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial potency of gambier toothpaste (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) against Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. Methods: The study was an in vitro laboratory experimental study and divided into six groups: 12.5% gambier toothpaste, 25% gambier toothpaste, 50% gambier toothpaste, 100% gambier toothpaste, fluoride toothpaste and placebo toothpaste. The antibacterial potency test was used disc diffusion method to measure the inhibitory zone value of toothpaste. Data were analyzed using One- Way Anova test and Post-Hoc Tukey test. Results: The entire group of gambier toothpastes (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) showed an inhibitory zone against Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. The gambier toothpaste group with a concentration of 100% had a significantly larger inhibition zone diameter than other concentrations, but was lower than the flouride toothpaste group and there were statistically significant differences. Conclusion: Gambir toothpaste (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) has antibacterial potency against Porphyromonas gingivalis starting from a concentration of 12.5% and the largest inhibition zone is at a concentration of 100%.
