Abstract

Infectious disease is a public health problem, especially in developing countries. Infectious diseases occur due to disturbances caused by microorganisms such as bacteria. Patients with infectious diseases caused by bacteria are generally given therapy in the form of antibiotics. Antibiotics can cause resistance. Another alternative that can be done to overcome this resistance is to use herbal ingredients from mulberry leaves (Morus nigra L.) which have a positive antimicrobial effect on the growth of microorganisms that cause infectious diseases. To obtain antibacterial compounds produced by mulberry leaves (Morus nigra L.) will require quite a lot of plant biomass, therefore another alternative that can be used to benefit from antibacterial compounds of mulberry leaves (Morus nigra L.) is by utilizing endophytic fungi. which is present in the leaves of mulberry (Morus nigra L.). This research was conducted from September to December 2021, at the Microbiology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sriwijaya University. This study aims to obtain endophytic fungi from mulberry leaves (Morus nigra L.) which have the potential to produce antibacterial compounds against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC6538 and Escherichia coli ATCC8739. The stages of the research were isolation, purification, cultivation and extraction, antibacterial activity test, bioautography test, characterization and identification. The conclusion of the study was that the endophytic fungi isolated from mulberry leaves (Morus nigra L.) had the potential to produce 7 pure isolates of antibacterial compounds. The secondary metabolite extract of isolate DM₁I₁ produced phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and terpenoids. DM₃I₁ isolate produced flavonoid compounds, tannins and terpenoids, while DM₆I₁ isolates produced alkaloids, phenols and terpenoids. The endophytic fungi isolate DM₁I₁ was identified as Curvularia sp., isolate DM₃I₁ as Aspergillus niger and isolate DM₆I₁ as Penicillium sp. which has a high potential to produce antibacterial power.
