Abstract
DENNY SATRIA MANDALA PUTRA. EFFECT OF COCL2 ON THE GROWTH OF RICE PLANTS (ORYZA SATIVA) UNDER SUBMERGED STRESS (SUPERVISED BY FIRDAUS SULAIMAN AND IRMAWATI) IN THE PROCESS OF CULTIVATING RICE PLANTS, FARMERS STILL HAVE DIFFICULTY IN ESTIMATING THE HEIGHT OF STANDING WATER, SO THAT CULTIVATED RICE PLANTS CAN BE AT RISK OF EXPERIENCING STRESS CONDITIONS DURING THE VEGETATIVE PHASE. THIS CONDITION WILL CERTAINLY HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. SUBMERGED STRESS CONDITIONS CAUSE HYPOXIA OR A CONDITION OF LACK OF OXYGEN SUPPLY IN CELLS, SO THAT ATP PRODUCTION AND PHOTOSYNTHETIC PROCESSES DECREASE AND RESULT IN LIMITED ROOT AND SHOOT GROWTH. BUT IN NON-TOLERANT VARIETIES, THEY WILL GENERALLY ELONGATE PLANT STEMS TO GET OUT TO FIND OXYGEN AND SUNLIGHT. THIS STEM ELONGATION MECHANISM IS CONSIDERED UNFAVORABLE FOR PLANTS, BECAUSE IT WILL DEPLETE NON-STRUCTURAL CARBOHYDRATE RESERVES THAT SHOULD BE USED AFTER THE SUBMERGED STRESS ENDS. THE USE OF COCL2 AS AN ETHYLENE INHIBITOR HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT BY SEVERAL STUDIES, BUT UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE STILL NOT MANY STUDIES THAT REPORT THE EFFECT OF COCL2 ON PLANTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE RELATED TO EFFORTS TO INCREASE TOLERANCE TO SUBMERGED STRESS. THE STUDY WAS ARRANGED USING A SPLIT PLOT DESIGN WITH RICE VARIETIES AS THE MAIN PLOT AND COCL2 CONCENTRATION AS SUBPLOTS. THE RICE VARIETIES USED WERE CIHERANG (NON-TOLERANT VARIETY) AND INPARI 30 (TOLERANT VARIETY). SAMPLING WAS CARRIED OUT DESTRUCTIVELY BY REMOVING 2 PLANTS IN EACH RESEARCH UNIT TO OBTAIN DATA ON THE VARIABLES OF LEAF AREA, ROOT DRY WEIGHT, STEM DRY WEIGHT, LEAF DRY WEIGHT AND TOTAL PLANT DRY WEIGHT. THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS OF DIVERSITY USING THE ANOVA TEST SHOWED THAT THE COCL2 TREATMENT OF SUBMERGED RICE STRESS SHOWED THAT THE GREENISH LEVEL OF THE LEAVES AT 14 DAYS OF RECOVERY HAD A SIGNIFICANT EFFECT. THE GREENISH LEVEL OF THE LEAVES AT 14 DAYS OF RECOVERY SHOWED A CONCENTRATION OF 300 PPM WHICH WAS THE HIGHEST NUMBER. THE RESULT OF FURTHER ANOVA TEST ALSO SHOWED THAT THE CIHERANG VARIETY (NON-SOAKING TOLERANT) HAD GOOD RECOVERY ABILITY. THE INPARI-30 VARIETY IS A VARIETY WITH A GOOD GROWTH RATE COMPARED TO THE CIHERANG VARIETY. THE RESULTS OF THE GROWTH ANALYSIS SHOWED THAT THE ADMINISTRATION OF COCL2 WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE A GOOD RECOVERY EFFECT ON SUBMERGED STRESS RICE PLANTS, SEEN FROM PLANT GROWTH DURING 7 DAYS OF RECOVERY AND 14 DAYS OF RECOVERY.
