Abstract

The research conducted in Ulak Lebar and surrounding areas, Lahat regency, South Sumatra with the title of Geological Study and The Coal Characteristics of Muara Enim Foration in Ulak Lebar Area, Western Merapi Districts, Lahat Regency, South Sumatra. Geologically, the research area is consists of three formations, such as Airbenakat Formation, Muara Enim Formation and Kasai Formation. Muara Enim Formation is known as the main coal-bearing formation in South Sumatra Basin. The main focus of the study aimed to to determine the characteristics of coal based on its physical and microscopic features, and also to know the cleat development at the coal seam in the research area. Physically, the coal is brownish black to black colored, with brown strike, dull luster, brittle, conchoidal fractures and has a relatively light weight. Cleat attributes observations were performed in three observation stations, namely LP 2A, LP 2B and LP 67, the results obtained indicating that the maximum stress level is NW-SE oriented. The presence of cleats is one of the factors in determining the coal maturity level, well-developed cleat on a coal seam indicating that the coal has not experienced high levels of maturity. The mineral that fills cleat openings is also affecting the coal quality value, as it affects the increase in mineral matter content, thereby reducing the calorific value of coal. Thus, supported also by the petrographic analysis on one coal sample showing that the coal in the research area was classified as low rank coal (sub-bituminous).
