Abstract
Background: The essential oil contained in basil leaves can help in the wound healing process. Wound healing process consists of inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling phases. Basil essential oil has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect so that it can accelerate the wound healing process. Objective: To determine the effect of basil essential oil extract gel in the number of macrophage cells of male wistar rats on the wound healing process. Methods: This study used a post test only control group design. 24 male wistar rats were divided into 4 groups. The wound was made on the mandibular gingiva with a 5 mm long incision within the depth of the alveolar bone. The first and third group was treated with 10% basil essential oil extract gel. Meanwhile the second and fourth group was treated with placebo gel. The treatment was given for 3 and 5 days. Samples of groups 1 and 2 were euthanized on the 4th day and groups 3 and 4 on the 6th day and brought to histology examination to count the number of macrophages cell and statistically analyzed. Results: The 10% basil essential oil group on the 5th day had the highest average value. Statistically, the basil essential oil extract gel group had a significant difference (p<0.05) than the placebo gel treatment group. Conclusion: The 10% basil essential oil extract gel did not have a significant difference compared to the placebo gel in terms of reducing the number of macrophages.
