Abstract

The development of the palm oil industry in Indonesia is growing rapidly that consider to Indonesia as the largest producer of palm oil in the world. This also needs to handle the waste produced. Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is a potential raw material to produce biodiesel because it contains free fatty acids and triglycerides. The acid value of raw material is 80 and it should be reduced first with esterification. High value of free fatty acid can reduce the quality and yield of biodiesel produced if directly transesterified. The purposes of this study were to find out how to use palm oil liquid waste as raw material to generate biodiesel and to analize the effect of catalyst H2SO4 added to quality of biodiesel (free fatty acid, %yield, density). Production of biodiesel was carried out by esterification with variations of catalyst H2SO4 (1.25, 1.35, 1.45, 1.55, and 1.65% (v/v)) at a temperature of 60oC for 2 hours. Transesterification was carried out at 60oC for 1 hour with NaOH catalyst 1.5% (w/w) and methanol 35% (w/w). The optimum result shows that the acid value of biodiesel decrease from 80 to 0.52 at ratio catalyst of H2SO4 1.55%. The optimum yield obtained is 75.14% at the catalyst ratio of 1.35%. The density of biodiesel for all variation is fulfilled the SNI 7182:2015 with amount of 0.8608-0.8619 (g/mL).
