Abstract

Expansive clay is one of the soils that have destructive properties that can cause problems in construction. These destructive properties such as large swelling and shrinkage properties, and high plasticity index values cause the soil to quickly deform under certain water conditions. In this condition, it is necessary to improve or stabilize the expansive clay by adding additional materials so that these destructive properties can be improved. The additional materials used are carbide waste and paper mill bottom ash, with variations of 10% carbide waste and 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30% paper mill bottom ash. The curing time was 0 days, 3 days, 7 days, and 14 days. In this study, the tests carried out were soil properties testing and mechanical testing in the form of standard soil compaction tests and California bearing ratio (CBR) soaked tests. The results showed that the addition of waste carbide and bottom ash could improve the destructive properties of the soil, which was indicated by a decrease in the value of the plasticity index and the optimum moisture content of the soil. In addition, soaked CBR has increased along with the addition of cabinet waste and paper mill bottom ash. The length of curing time also influences the increase in the soaked CBR value. The maximum soaked CBR value is 55.24% with variations of 10% carbide waste, 30% bottom ash, and 14 days of curing time. The swelling value in the soaked CBR test also decreased, with the lowest swelling value of 0.3% at 10% carbide waste variation, 30% bottom ash, and 14 days of curing time.
