Abstract

Preparation of Cu2O/C and Pt/C catalyst supported on substrate in the form of carbon sheets from gelam bark and carbon vulcan doped with polyaniline using by membrane electrode assembly (MEA) in the direct methanol fuel cell. Carbon sheets and carbon vulcan were mixed with Cu2O/C and Pt/C catalyst inks, polyaniline, PTFE and nafion, then sprayed onto surface of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) to form an electrode layers. MEA consists of membrane Nafion-117 that flanked by two electrodes, an anode and a cathode. The anode using by a Cu2O/C catalyst and the cathode using by a Pt/C catalyst. Electrochemical properties, conductivity, MEA performance and hydrophobicity of the coating were tested using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), variations in workload, methanol concentration and contact angle analysis. Based on CV measurement data, the Cu2O/C electrodes 60% carbon vulcan GDL vulcan and Pt/C electrodes 40% carbon vulcan + carbon sheets GDL sheets showed the highest catalytic activity of 7204 cm2/g and 16996.67 cm2/g. Based on the EIS measurement data, the Cu2O/C electrodes 40% carbon vulcan GDL vulcan and Pt/C electrodes 40% carbon vulcan GDL sheets showed the highest electrical conductivity values of 0.041 S/cm and 0.033 S/cm. MEA performance test gave the best result at 10% methanol concentration. The results of the hydrophobicity test showed that GDL with carbon vulcan had a larger contact angle than GDL with sheets carbon of 145.180 and 149.150.
