Abstract

Research of CdFe2O4 synthesis through coprecipitation method and its application for photodegradation and adsorption of methylene blue dye had been conducted. CdFe2O4 nanoparticles were characterized by using XRD, SEM-EDS, VSM and UV-VIS DRS. Diffraction pattern of XRD characterization shows the highest peak at 2θ = 30.29° with a crystal size of 18.70 nm. Furthermore, SEM-EDS characterization image shows that the surface morphology of CdFe2O4 is heterogeneous or agglomerated with the main constituent elements in the form of Cd (24.66%), Fe (26.61%) and O (32.76%). The VSM characterization result from the hysteresis curve obtained saturation magnetization of 28.14 emu/g. In addition, the result of UV-VIS DRS characterization obtained an energy band gap of 1.74 eV. CdFe2O4 nanoparticles has pHpzc of 5.35. Meanwhile, the optimum conditions for photodegradation and adsorption are obtained at a concentration of 2.5 ppm, contact time for 90 minutes with the addition of 0.2 mL of H2O2 30% with the percentage of methylene blue dye removal by photodegradation is 77.21% and adsorption is 67.99%. TOC analysis shows the total amount of carbon before degradation is 0.7716 ppm C and after degradation is 0.5643 ppm C with a percentage of degradation is 26.87% which indicates that the methylene blue dye is not completely oxidized.
