Abstract
Composite preparations (TiO2/C, V2O5/C, SnO2/C) and their application to Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFC) have been carried out. Carbon sheets were made from gelam bark powder and then hydrothermally and pyrolyzed, while carbon ribbons are made from reduced carbon sheets. The results of the carbon was made into electrodes. The electrodes were characterized using the Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) method to obtain the value of the Electrochemical Surface Area (ECSA), the Electrochemical Impedance (EIS) method to measure the conductivity value, the X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) method to identify the phase of a material, and the Scanning Electron Microscope method. (SEM) to show the morphology of the sample. The electrode was one of the materials from MEA. MEA performance test was carried out by measuring the OCV value and optimum power density. MEA with a V2O5/CR catalyst has an ECSA value of 191.83 cm2/g and a conductivity value of 2.033 x 10-3 S/cm, while MEA with a V2O5/CR;Pt/CR catalyst has an ECSA value of 200.96 cm2/g and the conductivity value is 0.845 x 10-3 S/cm. The performance test results show MEA with V2O5/CR catalyst has an OCV value of 0.545 V and an optimum power density value of 0.039 mW/cm2, while MEA with a V2O5/CR;Pt/CR catalyst has an OCV value of 0.498 V and an optimum power density value of 0.019 mW/cm2.
