Abstract

Research has been carried out on the synthesis of CuFe2O4/SiO2/NiO composites and its application on photocatalytic degradation of congo red dye. CuFe2O4 was synthesized using coprecipitation method, CuFe2O4/SiO2 by sol-gel method, and CuFe2O4/SiO2/NiO by hydrothermal method. The resulting CuFe2O4, CuFe2O4/SiO2, and CuFe2O4/SiO2/NiO were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, VSM, and UV-Vis DRS. The XRD pattern of CuFe2O4/SiO2/NiO shows the highest peak at 2θ = 35.63° with a crystal size of 9.66 nm. The morphology of the SEM-EDS depicts heterogeneous morphology with the constituent elements include Cu (6.07%), Fe(8.65%), O(35.79%), Si(3.11%) and Ni(32.38%). The VSM result of the hysteresis curve produces a saturation magnetization CuFe2O4/SiO2/NiO of 23.03 emu/g. The UV-Vis DRS results in energy band gap of 1.48 eV. CuFe2O4/SiO2/NiO magnetic composite has a pHpzc of 7.2. The best conditions for decreasing the concentration congo red dye were at concentration of 10 mg/L, contact time of 80 minutes and with the addition of 0.2 mL of H2O2. The effectiveness of reducing the concentration of dye produced by 86.49%. Determination of TOC with initial ppmC before degradation of 213.126 mg/L and after degradation to 3.7920 mg/L with a percentage of 98.22% which showed that the congo red dye was almost completely degraded.
