Abstract

Research on the synthesis of NiFe2O4/SiO2/NiO and its application on photocatalytic degradation of congo red dye has been done. The NiFe2O4 compound was synthesized through coprecipitation method, NiFe2O4/SiO2 composite was synthesized through the sol gel method, and NiFe2O4/SiO2/NiO composite was synthesized by hydrothermal method. The results of the synthesis of NiFe2O4/SiO2/NiO composite were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDX, VSM and UV-VIS DRS. The XRD pattern of NiFe2O4/SiO2/NiO compounds produced the highest peak at 2θ = 35.72° with a crystal size of 66.53 nm. NiFe2O4/SiO2/NiO image by SEM-EDX showed heterogeneous morphology with the constituent elements in the form of Ni(22.83%), Fe(4.7%), O(39.47%), and Si(3.25%). The results of the VSM characterization of the hysteresis curve resulted in a saturation magnetization of NiFe2O4/SiO2/NiO of 44.13 emu/g. The result of UV-VIS DRS produces energy band gap of 1.43 eV. Magnetic nanoparticles NiFe2O4/SiO2/NiO has a pHpzc of 6.13. The best conditions for reducing congo red dye were at a concentration of 20 mg/L, with a contact time of 120 minutes, and with the addition of 0.1 mL of H2O2. The effectiveness of reducing dye produced is 81.21%. These results were tested with TOC with initial ppmC before degradation of 388.13 mg/L and after degradation to 5.20 mg/L with a TOC degradation percentage of 98.66%.
