Abstract

Implementation of Early Breastfeeding Initiation (IMD) is something recommended by WHO in an effort to reduce the Infant Mortality Rate. In Indonesia, in the last decade there has been no research analyzing the implementation of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding by region. The purpose of this study is to analyze the implementation of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding based on regions in Indonesia. The sample in this study amounted to 6,060 sourced from the results of the Indonesian Health Demographic Survey (IDHS) in 2017. The implementation of the IMD was calculated from the proportion of mothers who gave birth within 2 years before the survey was carried out, with the status of the baby who had breastfed and the time the baby started breastfeeding after birth was 1 hour. This study uses binary logistic regression statistical test. The results showed that the prevalence of the implementation of Early Breastfeeding Initiation in Indonesia was 58.8%. The highest prevalence of IMD implementation was in the Nusa Tenggara region at 69.9% and the lowest prevalence was in the Sumatra region at 42.4%. Respondents in the Java-Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku Islands and Papua regions have a greater opportunity to implement Early Initiation of Breastfeeding compared to the Sumatra region. Factors related to the implementation of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding in each region vary, where the variable method of delivery is the only general factor associated with the implementation of Early Intiiation of Breastfeeding in all regions. This study shows wide variation in regional proportions and determinants of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding implementation in Indonesia. Appropriate policies and strategies are needed to improve Early Initiation of Breastfeeding implementation across the region to reduce inequality.
