Abstract

Payung Island, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra has the main community in the form of a mangrove ecosystem. The potential of mangroves can be developed into a mangrove ecotourism destination from ecological conditions because it is suitable for learning and research activities. Ecotourism developed with an ecological approach has the aim of preserving the environment that can provide benefits for learning, education, and research activities. The purpose of this study was to identify the condition of the mangrove ecosystem in the form of thickness and density, to identify the suitability of the mangrove area as a support for ecotourism development based on ecological conditions including biophysical aspects. This research was conducted in September 2021 using Sentinel-2 imagery in 2020 and analysis of geographic information systems. This research uses field survey method and image data processing. The results of this study indicate that the highest mangrove thickness is at station 2 of 1,641 m, while the highest density of mangrove species is at station 4 of 25 (ind/100m2). The results of the analysis of the calculation of the level of ecotourism suitability from the biophysical potential of the mangrove ecosystem in general are feasible and support mangrove ecotourism activities on Payung Island, where the Very Appropriate category (S1) is at station 2 with an IKW value of 81.57% and station 3 an IKW value of 86.84% with a total area of 151.2 ha. Meanwhile for the appropriate category (S2), station 1 has an IKW value of 78.94%, station 4 has an IKW value of 73.68% and station 5 has an IKW value of 71.05% with a total area of 341.19 ha.
