Abstract

Background: The condition of patients who are in the ICU / GICU are generally mechanically ventilated. Mechanical ventilation provides continuous positive pressure which can increase the formation of secretions in the lungs. The use of mechanical ventilation causes side effects and complications, one of which is airway infection. Airway infection associated with the use of a ventilator is known as Ventilator Assisted Pneumonia (VAP) (Jones, 2009). Collaborative intervention is the provision of a suction technique to clear the airway of secretions or sputum and also to avoid airway infection (Price & Wilson, 2012). Aim: Describes the implementation of emergency nursing practice which is focused on the implementation of nursing care with the "Suction Ett Technique for Ventilator Assisted Pneumonia (VAP) Patients to Overcome Ineffective Airway Clearing in the GICU Room, Rsmh Palembang. Method: he method of this research used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The subjects of this case study were three patients to explore the problem of nursing care for patients with Ventilator Assisted Pneumonia (VAP) in the GICU RSUP Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Result: Based on the results of the assessment, it was found that the three patients had respiratory disorders, so they had to use a mechanical ventilator with SIMV and PS modes. The priority of nursing problems in the three patients was ineffective airway clearance which was characterized by excessive sputum production. After suction the patient looks calm because it reduces secretions. The nursing problem of airway clearance in the three patients has not been resolved so that interventions must still be carried out. Conclusion: The conclusion of the researcher is that all respondents who have airway trauma or airway obstruction and have decreased peripheral oxygen saturation must be given suction i there has criterias for suction action. Keywords: Ventilator Assisted Pneumonia (VAP), mechanical ventilator, ineffective airway clearance, suction.
