Abstract

Research on the synthesis of Schiff Base and its application as a detecting for heavy metal ion Cadmium in water medium has been successfully carried out. First, the Schiff Base synthesis 2-[(phenylamino)methyl]phenol was perfomed using the reflux synthesis method. The Schiff Base synthesis was used 2-hydroxy benzaldehyde and aniline as a main precursor in ethanol solvent. The synthesized product obtained is a yellow solid obtained after the purification process using ethanol as a solvent. The synthesized solids were then characterized using thin layer chromatography, FTIR, and UV-Vis techniques. The TLC plate was shown that the synthesized Schiff Base is obtained pure. It was proven by a single spot that appeared on the TLC plate observation with an Rf value of 0.44. The FTIR spectroscopic studies were shown the presences of several vibrational modes of the functional groups that arrange the structure of Schiff Base 2-[(phenylamino)methyl]phenol, including the 3468 cm-1 (stretched OH), 3055 cm-1 (aromatic CH), 1614 cm-1 (C=N) and 1481 cm-1 (C=C). The UV-Vis spectroscopy studies provide absorption information from the formation of Schiff Base-Cd2+ complex molecules that shows the transition peak for π –π*. The hypochromic shift occurred from the wavelength value of 280 nm for pure Schiff Base to 315 nm for Schiff Base-Cd2+ base complex. The hypochromic shift indicates the formation of coordination compound molecules caused by the donor of a lone pair of electrons from the nitrogen atom into the Schiff Base molecule 2- [(phenylamino)methyl]phenol to cadmium metal ions. The selectivity test of the Schiff Base compound as a detection for the ion Cd2+ showed the addition of other metal ions Zn2+ and Cu2+. The UV-Vis absorption spectra showed a different absorption intensity by significantly and the different absorption maximum wavelength after adding different metals ion. The synthesized Schiff base can be used as a suitable molecule candidate for detected cadmium heavy metal ions in water medium. The development of a synthesis method to obtain a higher percent yield and much more detailed structural determination study using H-NMR still needs to provide much better information.
