Abstract

One of the efforts to reduce the rate of population growth and reduce maternal and infant mortality is to increase the use of modern contraception. In Indonesia, there have been no studies discussing the use of modern contraception by region in the last decade. This study aims to analyze differences in the use of modern contraception among married women by region in Indonesia. The sample in this study was 25,661 married women who had contraceptive data sourced from data from the 2017 Indonesian Health Demographic Survey (IDHS) which were analyzed using binary logistic regression statistical tests and visualized through the QGIS application in the form of a map of Indonesia. The results showed that the prevalence of the use of modern contraception in Indonesia was 61.2%. The highest prevalence of modern contraceptive use is in the Kalimantan region at 75.2% and the lowest is in the Papua region at 37.2%. Mothers living in the Kalimantan, Java-Bali, Sumatra and Sulawesi regions have a higher chance of using modern contraception than mothers in the Papua region. The factors associated with the use of modern contraception in Indonesia vary widely in all regions, where maternal age, number of living children and ideal number of children are common factors associated with contraceptive use in all regions. This study shows wide variation in regional prevalence and determinants of modern contraceptive use in Indonesia. Policies that are in accordance with regional characteristics are needed to reduce regional disparities in the use of modern contraception.
