Abstract
Research on the effect of electrolyte concentration, current and time on the electrolysis of ammonia to hydrogen gas production have be done. The process of ammonia electrolysis was carried out by varying the concentration of 0.5 M and 1 M ammonium chloride solution with 5 M potassium hydroxide plus 0.5 M ammonium chloride without potassium hydroxide added. The variation of electric current was 0.5; 1; 1.5; and 2 A and the variation of time 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 minutes. In this research, the result was obtained that the highest volume of hydrogen gas was at current 2 A with concentration of 1 M ammonia solution with 5 M potassium hydroxide added in the 90th minute of 51.5 mL. The highest reaction rate of hydrogen gas formation was current 2 A with 1 M ammonia solution + potassium hydroxide 5 M at 15 minute of 0.59 mL/min. The energy of water electrolysis required 0.76 watt.hour/g, while on ammonia electrolysis at ammonia concentration of 0.5 M and 1 M + potassium hydroxide 5 M and also 0.5 M without potassium hydroxide 5 M respectively 0,084 ; 0.066 and 0.115 watt.hour/g.
