Abstract
Abstract. The aims of this study are to analyze the conceptual understandings and the type of misconceptions experienced by junior high school students on the Lunar Phase materials in the Earth and Outer Space topics. The subject of the study comprised of 70 students of SMPN 1 Tirtayasa. The instrument used was a set of two-tier multiple choice test consisted of 20 questions accompanied by open reasons and equipped with CRI (Certainty of Response Index) analysis. The research results show the level of students’ conceptual understandings can be classified as the low category i.e. 19,20%, and the level of the misconceptions is in the medium category i.e. 43.2%. The dominant misconceptions experienced by students are about when does the full moon appear, when is the moon in the sky, pictures of half moon, the position of the lunar eclipse, and the order of the lunar phases. Based on the study, teachers should pay attention on students' misconceptions in physics teaching. Keywords: Misconceptions, Physics Education, Lunar Phases
