Abstract

The purpose of this study was to study response of soybean to water table modification and inoculation of mycorrhizal fungi in peat soil. This research was conducted from November 2017 to February 2018 at Research Station of Faculty of Agricultural, Sriwijaya University. Observation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) was conducted at the Fishery Basic Laboratory, Aquaculture Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. Current research tested two treatments, four levels of water table (G1 = -20 cm, G2 = -30 cm, G3 = -40 cm, and G4 = -50 cm) and two levels of mycorrhizal inoculation (M0 = 0 g inoculant, and M1 = 9 g inoculant). These treatments were arranged in a Factorial Randomized Block Design with three replicates. The results showed that the depth of the water table had no significant effect on soybean growth, and mycorrhizal infection. Peat subsidence and P uptake were significantly correlated with water table depth. Mycorrhizal inoculation had a significant effect on the length of infected roots and arbuscular colonization, but it had no significant effect on the colonization of hypha and vesicles, and the growth of soybean crop. This study also showed that moditying water table at -30 cm combined with mycorrhizal inoculation appeared to be effective in improving soybean growth in peat soil.
