Abstract
Banana plant (Musa spp.) is a horticultural plant that can grow in tropical Asia, such as Indonesia. Banana is a very good local commodity to be developed into a fruit plant that has a selling value in local and international markets. In increasing banana production, there are obstacles that occur in the field. A very important disease that attacks banana bunchy top virus, if the plants that have been attacked by the bunchy top virus do not bear fruit. Transmitted by vector insects, namely the banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa Coquerel, (Hemiptera; Aphididae). This study aims to determine the biology of P. nigronervosa in several Zingiberacea plant species and to determine whether plants from the Zingiberaceae family can follow the transmission efficiency of BBTV. The research was conducted at the Insectarium Laboratory and Student Research Land, Plant Protection Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya. The study was carried out from June 2021 to April 2022. Eight types of P. nigronervosa hosts were used in this study, namely the banana plant genotype Mas (Musa sp), the Zingiberaceae family plant consisting of kecombrang (Etlingera elatior), cardamom (Elletaria cardamomum), galangal (Alpinia galanga), Temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Turmeric (Curcuma longa), Temuputih (Curcuma zedoaria) The results showed that P. nigronervosa was able to live and reproduce not only in bananas but also in seven Zingiberaceae plant species with slight differences in several morphological and biological parameters. There was a significant difference between the biological characteristics of ticks living on kecombrang (10.80 ± 0.31 a) and cardamom (10.00 ± 0.20 ab) which had a longer life cycle but lower fecundity reproduction period compared to other experimental hosts used in the study so that these plants can be used for the control of reducing the population of P. nigronervosa ticks. While in the study of BBTV transmission, data were obtained with the average incubation period of BBTV symptoms ranging from 25-38 days after inoculation. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that there was no significant difference between the treatments of the host species P. nigronervosa and the association period of P. nigronervosa on the host plant but the lowest transmission intensity was cardamom, kecombrang, ginger and temu putih plants. So that plants from Zingiberaceae can be used to reduce the intensity of BBTV disease in banana plants. Symptoms of banana plants attacked by BBTV are very clear, such as on banana leaves, yellow streaks appear on the leaf tissue and the leaves do not expand normally, the leaves are clustered at the growing point and the leaf stalks are erect, the leaf edges are yellow to brown, in the form of colored curved lines. dark green which is known as a symptom of "J-Hooking" and leaves become necrotic, P. nigronervosa as the main host and can reproduce in addition to the main host so that it can spread BBTV disease to healthy banana plants.
