Abstract

Background: Indonesia consists of various population with many different racial backgrounds, one of which is Deutromelayu. Between one another, there are a number of differences in terms of physical characteristic, particularly body height. In forensic medicine, height is an important parameter for body identification, especially for individuals without any personal information. Regarding identification of a victim, data on body height is required in order to identify a dead body, parts of the body and body frame. Moreover, several conditions, including fracture of the lower extremities, vertebral deformities such as scoliosis, lordosis, and kyphosis, as well as inability to stand make us unable to conduct direct measurement of height. Hence, a prediction model is needed to estimate body height of certain individuals. Methods: This study is an analytical observational study conducted using cross sectional design. The subjects of the study were 112 people (P = 76, L = 36) medical students of Sriwijaya University batch of 2015 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Study participants comprised of 76 (67.9%) women and 36 (32.1%) men. The mean body height was taller in men (168.15 cm) compared to women (156.69 cm). The results showed significant correlation between height and foot length in both male and female participants (p <0.05). As for the foot width, significant correlation was only found among female participants (p <0.05), whereas in males, the correlation was not statistically significant (p >0.05). Conclusion: The highest correlation coefficient was found on the foot length among female (left foot r = 0.579 and right r = 0.542) and male (left foot r = 0.469 and right foot r = 0.407). The regression equation was calculated separately for each sex group. The study results showed that foot size measured in length and width of the soles can be used to estimate body height amongst women, whereas in men, only the width that can be used to estimat /e height. The regression equation can be used to estimate body height, particularly in the field of forensic medicine.
