Abstract

The high prevalence of hypertension in South Sumatera can become a serious problem if it is not handled properly. Uncontrolled hypertension can lead complications or even a deadly stroke. One of the important factors in controlling blood pressure and supporting success in treating hypertension is adherence of antihypertensive medication. This study aimed to investigate the association between adherence of antihypertensive medication on the incidence of stroke among patients with hypertension in South Sumatera. This was an analytic observational quantitative study with a cross sectional design that used secondary data from Riskesdas 2018. The sample in this study is hypertensive patients in South Sumatera who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, which are 1,392 respondents. The analysis in this study used the chi square test and the multiple logistic regression of the risk factor models. The results of the analysis showed that among 1,392 hypertensive patients in South Sumatera, only 7.8% were diagnosed with a stroke, and there were 49.4% of hypertensive patients who did not adhere to antihypertensive medication. Statistical tests show that there is no significant association between adherence to antihypertensive medication on the incidence of stroke in patient with hypertension (p value = 0.546; OR = 0,829; 95% CI = 0.451-1.524) after being controlled by age and physical activity variables. This study is expected to be a reference in the management of hypertension, where patients with hypertension can improve a healthy lifestyle, regularly control blood pressure, and adhere to antihypertensive medication by doctor’s recommendation for the success of hypertension therapy.
